There are a lot of things to love about our state, but health care is not one of them. When we get sick or injured, we seek medical attention. Doctors, hospitals, and medical facilities should be trustworthy spaces. Patients and victims should be able to walk into these spaces and feel hope that they will walk out better. Unfortunately, our Hawaii Medical Malpractice Attorneys at Kurzban, Kurzban, Tetzeli, & Pratt understand the hardships families go through when they do not get the help they need. Our Hawaii Medical Malpractice Attorneys know the stories too well of doctors and medical staff not providing the right kind of information. We know and we are here to fight for you.

Consumer Report

Consumer Report is a trusted nonprofit organization created to protect consumers. The organization reports on products and market places. Their research, journalism, media, and advocacy have protected consumers and maintained fair prices for consumers for over 80 years. Around March 2016 a report was published about how Hawaii was one of the lowest states for providing important information about doctors and medical staff to patients. For example, Hawaii does not provide easy access to information like probation for misconduct, malpractice payouts, or if their medical provider was convicted of a crime.

Hawaii’s Medical Board website was the main point of issue. On this website, patients should be able to find information about their doctors and medical care providers. This website should provide information related to a doctor’s medical license, specialty, and history. Doctors, for the most part, have clean records. However, there are some doctors who do get in trouble, but they still get to practice. Doctor’s profiles should state whether they are in trouble for sexual harassment, overprescribing controlled substances, unprofessional or dangerous practices, and drug or alcohol abuse. How is a patient supposed to trust their doctor if they can’t find any information about them?

Doctors who have a record are still able to perform their duties. Patients have the right to know if their doctors are in the middle of malpractice suits or not. Medical Malpractice suits happen when doctors cause harm to their patients. For example,

  • Failure to diagnose
  • Prescribe the wrong medication or the wrong dose
  • Surgical errors
  • Anesthesia errors
  • Failure to obtain consent
  • Healthcare worker fatigues

These errors can cause serious injury to an already sick patient. It can affect recovery time which means more time off of work. When you are an injured patient and your family relies on your income, the last thing you want to hear is that you will need to take more time off work.
